Dress Code 25-26 School Year

Cold Spring School prides itself on providing a safe, inviting and inclusive learning environment.  Therefore, the school prohibits anything it deems to be, or have the potential to be, disruptive, distracting, provocative, provoking, and/or intimidating that rises to the level in the school’s view as having a detrimental effect on the safe and educational atmosphere in the school environment. Cold Spring School administration reserves the right to make the final decision on whether any clothing item is deemed inappropriate or in violation of the dress code policy. 

Tops

• Shirts, blouses, sweatshirts, sweaters and vests
  • Shirts must be short or long sleeve, in any color or pattern free of images or words of any kind.
    • Logos must not exceed 2 inches
    • Undershirts, Tank tops, cut off or sleeveless shirts are not permitted
  • Free of rips, holes/tears.
    • No shear material whether or not skin is visible
  • All tops should be long enough to be tucked into the student’s bottoms
• ”Cold Spring Spirit Wear” is always allowed
  • Spirit Wear is defined as a shirt which is long sleeve or short sleeve and does not have an attached hood.  The shirt must include the Cold Spring School logo or “Cold Spring School.” 
• Hoodies are allowed only as cold weather gear and as such, will not be worn after the beginning bell or before the dismissal bell.
  • Students may wear a hoodie during recess or any outdoor activity but must be free of any images or words of any kind. 
  • Cold Spring branded hoodies will follow outdoor only policy but will be permitted. 

Bottoms

• Pants
  • Solid color chinos/slacks in khaki, black or navy blue
  • Solid color jeans (Black or Blue Denim)
    • Free of any rips or holes whether or not skin is visible
  • Pajama or lounge wear pants are not permitted
  • All pants should be worn at or above the hips
  • All pants should be free of rips and holes whether or not skin is visible through holes/rips
• Shorts/skirts/skorts
  • Khaki, Navy Blue, Black or Denim (black or blue)
  • All skirts, shorts and skorts should be worn at or above the hips
  • Free of rips and holes whether or not skin is visible through rips/holes
  • The length of the skirt, shorts or skirts must be no more than 2” above the student’s knee
  • Students are encouraged to wear shorts under a skirt
• Dresses
  • Any Color or Pattern – Free of images or words of any kind
  • Free of rips holes and shear material whether or not skin is visible through the rips/holes
  • Sleeves should cover the shoulder
  • Students are encouraged to wear shorts under a dress
• Leggings and Tights
  • May only be worn under dresses and skirts or shorts
  • Solid color only

Shoes

• Closed toe
• Closed heel
• No wheeled shoes
• Hard soled (sneakers, boots, etc)
  • Slippers, crocs, sandals or slides are not permitted at any time, including spirit days/weeks. 

Accessories

• No head coverings (hats, bandannas, etc.) are to be worn in the building or in a classroom at any time, unless they are worn to reflect religious or cultural practices. 

Headphones: 

• Wireless Headphones, Airpods or any wireless earbuds are not to be used during the school day. Students may utilize wired headphones when directed by school staff. Any wireless headphone that is worn by students, will fall under the Wireless device/Cell phone policy as stated in the parent family handbook.

Restrictions

This policy permits additional student attire requirements when necessary to ensure safety in certain academic settings (e.g. physical education, science or CTE courses). Additionally, this policy allows for reasonable variation in required student attire for participation in activities such as swimming or gymnastics. Attire worn in observance of a student’s religion is not subject to this policy.

Students may not wear clothing, jewelry, or personal items that:

• Are pornographic, contain threats, or that promote illegal or violent conduct such as the use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia;
• Demonstrate hate group association/affiliation and/or use hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or other protected groups;
• Intentionally show private parts (nipples, genitals, buttocks). Clothing must cover private parts in opaque (not able to be seen-through) material; ensure that all undergarments are hidden from view.
• Cover the student’s face to the extent that the student is not identifiable (except clothing/headgear worn for a religious or medical purpose); or
• Demonstrate gang association/affiliation.

Enforcement

Typical consequences for a violation of this policy include:

• Dress code violations are not Out of School Suspension offenses
• 1st offense: parent/guardian contact and the directive to cover, change, or remove the non-complying attire
• 2nd offense: parent phone call and directive to change 
• 3rd offense: required parent/student restorative conference
• The Principal or their designee should notify a student’s parent/guardian of the school’s response to violations of the student dress policy
