Literacy Instruction Aligned to the Science of Reading

At our school, we are committed to building strong foundational literacy skills for every student. We use the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum, which integrates rich content knowledge with research-based reading instruction. CKLA is fully aligned with state Science of Reading requirements, ensuring students develop the decoding, comprehension, and critical thinking skills necessary for lifelong literacy.

To further support early reading development, we supplement our core instruction with the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) program. UFLI provides targeted, systematic phonics support that reinforces essential reading skills, especially in the early grades.

Together, these programs create a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to literacy that empowers all learners to become confident, capable readers.

Mathematics at Cold Spring School

At Cold Spring School, we use the Zearn Math curriculum for grades K–8 to provide a rigorous, engaging, and supportive math learning experience for all students. Zearn is designed to build deep conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas—not just procedural skills. Through a combination of whole-group instruction, digital lessons, and hands-on problem solving, students learn to make sense of math, explore multiple strategies, and apply their learning to real-world situations.

Zearn’s approach is aligned with the latest research in math education and supports all learners by integrating visual models, interactive practice, and immediate feedback. This helps students not only learn how to solve problems, but why the solutions work—laying a strong foundation for higher-level math and lifelong problem solving.

Targeted Intervention to Support Every Learner

At Cold Spring School, we are dedicated to meeting the academic and developmental needs of all students. To ensure every learner receives the right support at the right time, we implement a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to closely monitor student progress and growth. This approach allows us to provide timely, data-driven interventions tailored to individual needs.

Every grade level has a built-in intervention block as part of the daily schedule. During these blocks, students participate in small-group, differentiated instruction in both math and English Language Arts (ELA). Whether a student needs additional support, reinforcement, or enrichment, intervention blocks are designed to meet them where they are.

In grades K–2, students also participate in annual dyslexia screening as required by the Indiana Department of Education. If a student is flagged as at risk for characteristics of dyslexia, families are promptly informed and additional screenings or interventions are put in place based on the student’s needs.

Through MTSS, strategic intervention blocks, and early screening, Cold Spring ensures that every student receives the support they need to succeed.
